Spirit Lead

Do not quench the Spirit. –I Thessalonians 5:19

The primary means the Spirit works in us is by the Word. The Spirit applies the Word to our lives making truth known, and showing untruth for what it is. Paul wants the Thessalonians to know that the Spirit can work in other ways, but that even those ways must be proven by the Word.

As Christians we are called to a lively faith. The Spirit works in us, leading us to do the work of God, but at the same time that work is not always the fantastic events we, or 1st century Christians expect it to be. At the same time, there would have been many in Greece especially, whose interest in reason and philosophy would have lead them to doubt the idea of being moved by the Spirit.

We are lead by the Spirit, but the Spirit often leads us by bringing the Word to mind. The Spirit makes us vigilant, and warns us against evil, as well as alerting us to opportunities to do good; but even in these instances it works by reminding us of the Word, and applying the Word to our circumstances.

We should always be open to the moving of the Spirit. At different moments throughout the day he may indeed be leading us to do, or protecting us from, something unexpected. The monotony we perceive in life can dull our senses to both dangers and opportunities. We may seem to do the same thing daily, but events around us are never the same. We may not discern differences in our world, but God is aware of all that is going on, and through the Spirit, he brings his Word to bear on all we encounter.
